Canadian Peace Movement Is Dismayed by John McCallum’s Remarks and Vows to Fight Against Missile Defence!

Toronto: The Canadian Peace Alliance (CPA), the largest Canada wide peace coalition is urging the Government of Canada to not sign on to Missile Defence (MD). A nationwide campaign of lobbying and street action is now being organized to fight Canadian participation in MD.

MD runs counter to Canada’s traditional multilateral approach to security and its long-standing support for international non-proliferation, arms control and disarmament agreements. Despite what we are told by the US and Canadian governments this Missile Defence plan will not make us safer but will destabilize global security and provoke an renewed arms race. Foreign Minister Bill Graham asserts that MD is not going to lead to weapons in space. He should read the US space command document “Vision for 2020” which states “Missile Defence will evolve into a mix of ground and space sensors and weapons”.

“John McCallum’s announcement that DND will begin discussion with the US on Missile Defence negates Canadian foreign policy commitments and will undermine international non-proliferation, arms control and disarmament regimes. “, says Judith Berlyn co-chair of the CPA. “We demand that Canada say no to MD and respect its obligations as a signatory of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty”, added Dave McKee also co-chair of the CPA. “In May 2001 the Prime Minister promised a public debate on MD. We demand the Government respect this promise.”

In cities all across Canada peace groups are actively campaigning against Missile Defence. They are sending petitions in to the House of Commons, writing letters to Cabinet members and their own MP’s and planning street actions intended to stop Canadian involvement in Missile Defence.

Canadian Peace Alliance announces the pan-Canadian Day of Action to STOP THE WAR!

Toronto: The Canadian Peace Alliance (CPA) and its member groups are mobilizing for a pan-Canadian day of action to stop the war on Saturday April 12th. There are actions planned for cities and town all across the country. The events are part of an international day of action which will see demonstrations in dozens of countries including Britain and the USA .

“The Canadian Peace movement is still mobilizing despite the propaganda onslaught from the Pentagon”, says Dave McKee from the CPA. “We have actions planned all over the country from small towns to big cities. The level of activity is impressive and goes to show the resolve of peace loving citizens of this country.”

Everything from big peace concerts to vigils and rallies are being organized on more than 40 communities from coast to coast.

“We are really worried about the fact that there has been no no cease-fire, so people are still dying and there are concerns about guerrilla warfare, as well as concerns about the reconstruction role of US without the UN, and concerns that the US will move on to Syria, Iran, North Korea.”, said Susan Thompson, organizer of an anti-war rally in Peace River, Alberta. “Also, we are concerned that there is no debate on the illegality of this war”

A main focus of the activities is to urge the Canadian Government to call for a cease-fire in the United Nations so that the Iraqi people can avoid a massive humanitarian disaster. It is estimated that 13-16 million Iraqi men, women and children are at risk of starvation and even more don’t have access to safe drinking water. If the war doesn’t end soon these civilians will begin to die en masse. It is the duty of our government to act and to call for humanitarian aid now!

Organizers are also using this day of action to spread the word about the massive demonstrations planned for George Bush’s visit to Ottawa on the 4th and 5th of May.

Canadian Peace Alliance calls for civic governments to oppose war

Already 29 councils have adopted resolutions

Toronto- With war continuing in Iraq, and the Government of Canada admitting that Canadian troops are playing an active role in the conflict, the Canadian Peace Alliance (CPA) is calling on civic governments acrosss the country to adopt resolutions against war. The CPA is pressing the Government of Canada to denounce the war against Iraq, to declare Canada’s non-participation in the war and bring home all Canadian troops and vessels in the region, and to urge an emergency meeting of the United Nations General Assembly to address the crisis and pursue a peaceful resolution.

“Public pressure forced the government to state that Canada would stay out of this war”, said Sid Lacombe, Campaign Organizer for the Canadian Peace Alliance. “Public pressure will continue until the government makes good on that statement by denouncing the war, withdrawing Canadian troops and vessels, and promoting an immediate ceasefire and a peaceful resolution to this crisis. Across the country, more and more civic governments are adopting resolutions against the war because they understand that war is not the answer.”

The CPA is maintaining a list of communities that have passed resolutions against war and is updating this “Cities for Peace” list on its web site at www.acp-cpa.ca .
